We started anew “the Chef’s Club” where several tables of Residents were able to eat a special meal. Our activity aide and a volunteer prepared the meal in the coffee shop especially for the Residents who participated.
Since the majority of our Residents from the first 4 tables are Navajo, they wanted a Navajo specialty which was a mutton stew with steamed corn (steamed corn looks and takes like hominy); also served with the meal was fry bread, which is a staple for the Navajos. They were so happy when they saw the mutton stew, one of the Navajo men said, “This is just like being at home.” I think you could say that that is our goal, since St Jeanne Jugan used to say “Making the Elderly happy is what counts.”
