Columbus Day Parade

It is well know that “Columbus Day” is a federal holiday in most states and very often it is marked by no mail delivery, schools are closed and parades are held.

It is interesting that most of the “Columbus Day Parades” are in areas that have a large population of Italians. There are several states that do not call it “Columbus Day” but rather “Indigenous Day” of “Native American Day,” since the Native Americans were here in this country before Columbus

Here at Villa Guadalupe, we decided to mark “Columbus Day” with our own “parade.” We had two of the ships – the Nina and the Pinta –  in which Resident’s in wheel chairs were able to be “Captains.” You could say that we marked “Columbus Day,” but it was our Native Americans that steered the two ships. I might also mention that the two “Captains” probably have never seen an ocean or a ship like Columbus’ since we are in a desert!

Happy “Columbus Day!”
