One might ask how a novice from Tonga (one of the Polynesian islands) got to Gallup, New Mexico? Yet, we had the great joy of welcoming a first year novice from our novitiate in Queens Village, New York, Sr. Malia Makalita entered last year in our home in Samoa.

She arrived from the novitiate of Queens to make her apostolic experience with us here at Villa Guadalupe. During this time she will get to live more closely the beautiful life of a Little Sister of the Poor in our home and learn to care for the elderly, following the charism of our mother foundress, St. Jeanne Jugan. One unique difference here in Gallup she has had the opportunity of going to lessons in Navajo and one of our Residents who is Zuni is teaching her a few words in Zuni.
