Navajo Christmas Play

There are Christmas plays and there are Christmas plays.

I would say that here at Villa Guadalupe we had a very unique Christmas play this year. How many could say they not only had real sheep, but many former shepherds in the audience! Many of our Residents are Navajos and sheep are very important to them in their culture. The moment the audience heard the “bleat” of a sheep there were many smiles. Some Residents, including one who was 100 years old, began to “baa” back to the sheep.

The actors and actresses included many of our Residents, employees and children of our employees and friends. The baby Jesus fell asleep as soon as the play began, and did not budge until the closing applause. The Kings came through the audience, processing in. Two of the Kings were Navajos and the third from Jamaica.

One of the nurses played the Organ in between the acts and the “Navajo class” sang “O Holy Night” in Navajo.

All in all, many said that the baby, the sheep and the goat all three stole the show!
