We had the great joy during the “Inter-Ceremonial” to have a visit from “Miss Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremony” also known as the “Queen” of the Ceremonial here in Gallup. With her were four young women that are competing for the same title.

During the week of the Ceremonial, they have competition, showing that they know their culture: to be able to speak Navajo, to weave, sheep shearing and to know the many traditions of the Navajo Culture.

The current queen sang and danced of the Rainbow. The rainbow for the Navajo means peace and reconciliation.

One of the competitors played a Navajo flute, while another sang and played the drum. The Residents all enjoyed them so much. They even sang “Happy Birthday” in Navajo to one of our Residents who celebrated his birthday that day.

It is at the end of the ceremonials that they are chosen as Queen and they then receive their crown.
